When hiring painting contractors for your renovations, it is important to choose the right company for the job. Renovations on residential, commercial and industrial properties are costly and require a lot of emotional and financial investment. You want to ensure the people you hire to help you are going to make the experience easier!
Here are some points to take into consideration, when hiring a painting company:
1. Reviews and referrals This is arguably the most important thing in hiring a contractor. You want to ensure they have provided good service to previous customers and have established a good reputation. Ask around with your friends, family and neighbours, check for reviews online or ask the company directly for references.
2. Experience Their experience and proven good work is something you’ll want to check out before hiring a painting contractor. This can be done through observation – do they educate you in the estimate process and provide you with confidence that they know what they are doing? This can also be seen through pictures – ask them directly or check their online gallery/social media. They don’t necessarily have to have been in the business for decades, but they should know what they are doing!
3. Safety Especially when hiring a painter for larger, more complex jobs (for example, high up places that require harnesses) you want to ensure they are safe. You can request that they are WSIB (Work safety insurance board) insured and use the proper equipment. This is important for the painters themselves, but also your home.
4. Communication Hiring a painter with great communicative skills is important. You want a sales rep and production manager who schedules you promptly, is very clear in the estimate, answers questions directly and walks you through the painting process step by step.
5. Type of paint Be sure to figure out what type of paint they use and research it for yourself. Poor quality paint, despite how highly skilled the painter may be, will not go on as easily, as smooth or last as long. Quality paint companies recommended by us are Dulux, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. Once you have a qualified paint brand, you want to know the type of paint being used to ensure it is appropriate for the work required. Different surfaces require different paint. A certain desired look may require a specific sheen (glossy, matte, etc.).
6. Appearance Now, most contractors are working with messy things all the day. That being said, when dealing with a sales rep/estimator pay attention to their overall appearance. If they are excessively messy and don’t seem to take care of their belongings, it is likely the clean up process of the job will be similar! You want someone who knows how to clean up and wants to reflect their company with pride.
7. Written contracts Ensure to have a written contract of what work is required and the price for that exact work. You may even want to request a further break down! With written agreements, there are no questions in the future and everything is clear for both parties. Additionally, check their warranty and guarantee policy. This can help in the future in case anything were to need repairs.
8. Personality match You should generally like the representative you work with. If the company has all the points above but you don’t gel with the personality involved, it is best to look elsewhere! You want to feel friendly with your team, so you feel comfortable expressing any and all concerns and you feel confident they will do whatever it takes to deliver quality. You also should feel comfortable with the people working in your home/office/etc.!
By using the above points, you will surely find the perfect painting contractor for you!
